Neurotoxins are the world’s most popular wrinkle relaxers in 2025. While it’s true that they’re quite similar in formulation, there are some differences worth noting.

How Neurotoxins Work

Neurotoxins use botulinum toxin type A to reduce movement in the facial muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. They commonly treat:

  • Frown lines, aka “11s” between the brows
  • Forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet at the edges of the eyes
  • Bunny lines at the bridge of the nose
  • Lipstick lines around the lips
  • Chin dimples
  • Jawline
  • Platysmal Bands on the neck

After treatment, those repetitive movement lines fade, and your face looks smoother and more rested.

How Neurotoxins Differ

While all cosmetic neurotoxins contain the same active ingredient—botulinum toxin type A—their formulations differ slightly. The most common neurotoxin includes additional accessory proteins that form a protective coating around the active molecule. These proteins help stabilize the product but may, in rare cases, lead to the body developing antibodies over time. When that happens, the neurotoxin may become less effective or stop working entirely, a condition known as treatment resistance.

In contrast, another well-known neurotoxin is formulated without these accessory proteins. This “naked” or purified version reduces the risk of triggering an immune response, making it a popular alternative for individuals who’ve stopped responding to other formulations. Additionally, patients with sensitivities or allergies to complex proteins may find this stripped-down option to be a better choice. Aside from formulation, these products are quite similar.

Some neurotoxins begin working within one to two days, while others may take up to a week. Results typically last between three to four months, depending on the specific product and your body’s response.
